Each year, colour experts at Pantone meet to agree their colour of the year. In this blog post, we discuss 2023’s winner, Viva Magenta, and look at how you can incorporate the shade into your office design.
Viva Magenta (or Pantone 18-1750 as it is also known) is, as the name suggests, a vibrant magenta colour. Straddling the line between pink and red, it was chosen as Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023.
Pantone describes Viva Magenta as ‘an unconventional shade for an unconventional time’ – and an unconventional time it most certainly is. The world of work is changing more quickly than it ever has before. There’s economic uncertainty brought on by the pandemic, the war in the Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis. But there’s also lots to be excited about too. The world is gradually reawakening following COVID-19 and technology continues to evolve in leaps and bounds. Viva Magenta has been chosen to encapsulate this feeling of excitement and optimism.
If we dive into colour theory for a moment, magenta is the perfect choice. Reds are said to conjure feelings of energy and power, whereas pink evokes hope and positivity. The colour is also said to have been chosen due to its connection with the natural world. This is fitting, given sustainability will continue to be a hot topic in 2023.
If we’re honest, there’s not much that doesn’t go with Viva Magenta. It’s surprisingly multipurpose for such a bold colour. Use it sparingly with a monotone or light, pastel palette if you’re going for something understated. Team it with deep jewel tones like emerald green and navy blue for a luxe feel. Or pair with pinks, reds and neons to really pack a punch! The world really is your technicoloured oyster with this shade.
Viva Magenta looks set to be a big trend when it comes to home and interiors – but it’s influence will go far beyond paint alone. As the colour strikes the balance between warm and cool, it complements a variety of different skin tones. This is sure to make it a hit in the fashion and beauty world. Expect to see magenta clothing, accessories and make-up making their way onto catwalks (and shelves) throughout the year.
Savvy brands will also be exploring how they can jump on the magenta trend. We predict Viva Magenta making its way into everything from packaging to graphic design in 2023. Of course, many companies will already have pre-existing brand guidelines to stick to. But where there is flexibility to get creative, we expect magenta to make an appearance.
Viva Magenta is great colour to use in office design as it is versatile. How you use very much depends on your office culture and the mood you are trying to evoke.
If you are wanting to conjure energy and creativity, go big and use Viva Magenta on your walls. It will certainly make an impression! It would also look great in your reception area as its vibrancy will help to create a welcome and friendly space.
If you’re wanting to create a more laid-back office environment, use it sparingly to give a pop of colour. Magenta furniture would look great. Or, if that’s too much, try colourful soft furnishings to subtly embrace the trend. Another great way to bring in Viva Magenta would be through those ‘little touches’. Light fittings, wall art or even a floral arrangement are all ways to get the look.
Love it or hate it, Pantone’s colour of the year will certainly help you to make a statement.
