The changing business landscape as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has led many companies to reassess what they need from an office. For some, their current space just doesn’t cut the mustard and building relocation is what’s needed to take their business to the next level. Here, we share our thoughts on how to plan the perfect office move.
Why move offices?
There are many reasons why a business might choose to move to a different office space. Here are just a few:
New ways of working – the post pandemic shift to hybrid working means that a number of companies no longer need the space they once did. Alternatively, they may need a reconfigured space to reflect changes to working practices.
Sustainability – the carbon footprint of our offices continues to be a hot topic. If changes to existing buildings aren’t feasible, some businesses are actively seeking out more environmentally friendly workspaces to move into.
Cost – as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, many companies are finding they can get better value for money at another property.
Location – with more staff working from home, some businesses may want to move into – or out of – a big city to encourage their staff into the office. For others, practical benefits, such as more parking, is the driver of change.
Office design – most businesses have had to make at least some changes to their office design as a result of the pandemic. For some, starting again with a blank slate and converting an industrial unit or warehouse for example is just what’s needed.
How do I decide if moving is right for my business?
Before you take the plunge and move offices, you’ll want to make sure it’s the right decision for you:
Think about your why – take some time to evaluate your reasons for wanting to move and set some objectives for your new space. Should it be more energy efficiency for example, or have outdoor space for your employees to enjoy? What are your non-negotiables?
Be clear about what you’re leaving behind – There might be lots that you love about your current space that would be difficult to find elsewhere. Revisit the objectives you set above. Are there solutions that you could implement at your current space that would meet them? Refurbishing your existing building might not be as difficult or expensive as you think.
Make sure your new office delivers – the market is fast paced – but don’t feel pressure to move too fast. Make sure you take the time to really examine your new space to confirm it gives you just what you need.
How do I make my move a success?
Once you’re sure you’ve found the perfect office space, you’ll want to plan the perfect move. Here are our top tips:
Research – understand how your new location will impact your business and your teams. Make sure you’ve considered the risks and issues and have mitigations in place to deal with them.
Communicate – when it comes to office moves, you really can’t communicate with your employees too much! Make sure you talk to your teams about their requirements before you choose a new space. Once the new location has been confirmed, keep them updated on every part of the move.
Plan – it sounds obvious, but make sure you have a blueprint of your new space so you can plan where everything needs to go at the other end. It might be useful to assign a move coordinator to oversee all elements of the relocation.
Teamwork – bring your teams together to help with the move and start to build your new and improved office culture. Work with the move coordinator to delegate specific tasks to particular individuals or teams. You can’t do it all alone.
Celebrate – moving office is a big deal. Make sure you plan time in to mark the occasion, get to know the new space and celebrate the new direction you’re heading in!
